Renew Your PR Card in Vancouver

Are you a permanent resident of Canada living in Vancouver? If you arrived in Canada subsequent to 2002, you were given a permanent resident card, or PR card, after arriving. This permanent resident card expires every five years and has an expiry date indicated right on the card itself.

It is very important that you keep this permanent resident card valid at all times by renewing it before it expires – otherwise, you will not have valid proof of your status in Canada and you will not be able to return to Canada if you leave the country.

When renewing your permanent resident card in Vancouver

Every permanent resident card renewal begins with an application form. This application form is the same one someone would use to obtain their initial permanent resident card, except this time you would check the box that indicates the application is for a renewal.

Before you fill out the application form, read it and make sure that you understand and will follow all of the instructions. There will also be a document checklist included in your application package. Make sure that you include everything that is required, and if you cannot, that you have prepared a cover letter to explain to the immigration officer why these items are not available.

Once an immigration officer receives your application package, they will review the application and supporting documentation to make sure that you have met the residency requirement. The residency requirement is your required minimum physical presence in Canada, and that is two years out of the five year period. If you can’t meet this requirement, speak to an immigration lawyer immediately.
